Gen3.theanvil.io 502 bad gatway

Hi,

I am trying to explore some GTEx data from https://gen3.theanvil.io/explorer, as gtex-v8-free-egress-instructions guided, but recently, we cant access this data with gen3-client, its report a network error, and we aslo cant visit https://gen3.theanvil.io/explorer its report a 502 bad gatway error.

Thanks for your kindly help.

Hi @zhang616,

Thank you for your question! Unfortunately the Gen3 commons are now decommissioned. You can now access the GTEx data through the AnVIL Data Explorer.

Please refer to this announcement for more details.

Hi,

Thanks for your quick response, I completely understand and respect the decision you have made regarding the situation. It is evident that continuing to bear the substantial traffic cost would not be fair on your part. However, I was wondering if it would be possible for you to consider displaying a note on the webpage https://gen3.theanvil.io/explorer rather than completely shutting down the site? This could provide some information or alternative options for users.

At the same time, as a personal request, I would like to inquire if there are any plans in the pipeline to offer additional download channels in the future. GTEx is a data resource widely recognized by academia, the current costs associated with GCP traffic are still expensive for many researchers in developing countries. By providing alternative avenues, it would greatly benefit this community.

Thank you for you attention.

Hi zhang616,

Thank you for your thoughtful message and for understanding the complexities surrounding data egress costs. I want to clarify that the AnVIL team does not have control over the Gen3 URLs, including the one you referenced, and unfortunately, we are unable to make changes to that page. However, we have placed a banner on relevant AnVIL website pages to inform users that the free egress of GTEx data has been decommissioned.

Regarding additional download channels for AnVIL data, we are actively exploring other egress-free options to facilitate data access for users. For now, we encourage users to access and analyze GTEx data directly on the cloud via AnVIL. This remains the most cost-effective solution for avoiding high data transfer fees.

We appreciate your feedback and will keep the community informed of any new developments regarding alternative data access channels.

Best regards,
Stephen Mosher
