Hello,
I am new to AnVIL and had some basic questions. I am a staff scientist and a billing account was set up for our lab tied to my PI. I was able to log in and see that our billing account exists on STRIDES and get onto the Google Cloud platform. In the tutorial sent out to us, it talks about starting “My First Project”, but when I tried to do that, I didn’t see that button and then when I tried to just create a new project, I wasn’t able to select a workspace. When I asked my PI to log in to see if she can see what the tissue is, she wasn’t able to log in. So my question is, where exactly are we supposed to login to first start using AnVIL and how can we set up the lab members with access? Ultimately, we will have a couple of us in the lab doing work that will use our billing account and we are interested in viewing and processing dbGap datasets that we have permission to use.
Thanks! – Seema
Hi Seema,
Thanks for posting your question! First up, did you set up an AnVIL account yet? From your post it sounds like you’ve been working in GCP console so far. To get started on AnVIL, you will need to create an AnVIL account at https://anvil.terra.bio. These are the instructions you should follow to set up your account with an institutional email address: https://support.terra.bio/hc/en-us/articles/360029186611-How-to-set-up-a-Terra-account-with-a-non-Google-email. Make sure the email you are using is the same as the one that is connected for the Google Billing Account. If you’re encountering issues, you may need to contact your institution’s IT for help if they will have to associate your institutional email address with Google for you in order to create an account. Any lab members who are going to be doing this work on AnVIL will need to create accounts as well.
Once an account is created, you will need to connect your STRIDES credits available through the Google Cloud Platform to AnVIL: Chapter 2 PIs and Lab Managers | Getting Started on AnVIL . You must have ‘administrator’ permissions on the Google Billing Account to do this, so if you cannot follow the instructions then you will have to contact STRIDES to add Terra to your Billing Account (as described in the instructions above).
Once these are done, in AnVIL (anvil.terra.bio), you will be able to create a Terra Billing Project linked to your STRIDES credits through these instructions: Chapter 2 PIs and Lab Managers | Getting Started on AnVIL . And finally, you’ll be able to add lab members with these instructions: Chapter 2 PIs and Lab Managers | Getting Started on AnVIL.
Please let us know if any of these steps are completed already or if you have any questions about the process! We also have our next AnVIL Demos on August 20 at 10 am ET if you’d like to join to chat about your questions: Register for AnVIL Demos.
