Question about AnVIL setup and cost for dbGaP phs000933

Hello,

I am working on a dbGaP request for phs000933 and plan to use AnVIL as the cloud environment.

Could you please advise on the setup steps, estimated storage/compute costs, and whether phs000933 can be accessed through AnVIL?

Thank you,
Emily

Hi @Emily,

Thanks for your question!

In preparing your dbGaP request, you might find the following helpful:

Please note you will need to use an institutional account (not Gmail) linked to an NIH identity to work with dbGaP data on AnVIL. Learn more about this here. Do you plan on transferring data from dbGaP to AnVIL?

Thanks,
Ava

Hi @avahoffman

Thanks for your reply!

Yes, we are planning to transfer data from dbGaP to AnVIL. I was a little confused about the order of the process. Should we first complete the AnVIL setup and then update/submit the dbGaP application, or does the dbGaP application need to be approved before we can proceed with the AnVIL setup?

Thank you for your guidance!

Best,
Emily

Hi @Emily

You can do some of this work simultaneously.

  • To get access to data on dbGaP, you usually need to submit information about where you will analyze it (on AnVIL). There will be some turnaround time.
  • While you wait, you can do some setup prior to data analysis on AnVIL. For example, making an account, linking your NIH identity, and setting up any workflows you’d like to use. Here are two WDL workflows in Dockstore for getting data from dbGaP:
